Project Description

Temporal Power’s flywheel energy storage system was chosen by the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in Ontario, Canada, to deliver regulation services to the Ontario electricity grid. The project was designed by Temporal Power and is operated by NRStor Inc., a Toronto based developer. This facility has been providing +/-2MWs of regulation services to the Ontario grid since July 2014.

What are the key assets and functions deployed in this project?

The project is the first grid-connected commercial flywheel facility in Canada and provides regulation service to Ontario’s IESO with up to 5 times the effectiveness of conventional technologies. It is a 10-flywheel system utilizing 250 kW flywheels, providing a +/- 2.5 MW nameplate capacity. This facility provides frequency regulation, helping balance supply and demand of energy on the grid.

What is the value or impact?

This project provides Frequency Regulation, displacing other generation assets which have historically provided this service to the grid. The millisecond response time enables more dynamic system responses, which in turn moderates the grid impact of intermittent renewables. The rapid system response and accurate system output supports increasing levels of renewables and avoids curtailment scenarios. By allowing conventional generation to increase outputs of usable kWh, the facility reduces overall energy costs, fuel consumption and GHG emissions.
